A few weeks ago, I read an article about how a large percentage of mail-order brides were being bought and brought to the USA, promised a loving husband, a suitable home and lots of kiddos, only to turn into victims of spousal abuse. I guess the guys figure, “Hell, I bought her, I can do what I want with her!” Sound familiar?
Not only are the days of slavery not over, we have found a contrivance to legalize it again. Now that’s progress. The only difference is this time its voluntary on the share of the “slaves”.
One of these days I want to interview some of these women who place themselves up for sale. What kind of dreadful situation does one have to live in to reckon that being bought by a weirder might be a better option? I can’t even imagine.
I’m not here to judge these women, though. I feel extremely sorry for them. I know what it’s like to go into a marriage full of hope and excitement and to have the rug pulled out from under you. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a dime for my experience but I’m not sure that would have made it any simpler.
In any event, I started wondering if there were any mail-order husband websites out there. Turnabout is honest play, right? Maybe I can buy some guy and beat the crap out of him? Heck, I might even learn to like him! So, I started my search.
I’m pleased to recount to all my single girlfriends that yes, there is at least one website out there where we can really buy a husband. Hot dog!
On the website I found, there is a guy who will be available in 18 months (when he gets out of prison), a guy who is 7′5″ and pierced (but not in the ear), another who had a terrible experience with paint thinner, and my personal common – one who has been marked down to half price!
Apparently this website is someone’s plot of a joke and I’ll admit, I haven’t laughed that hard in a very long time. But, there are hundreds of mail-order bride websites that are not a joke. Women really use these sites to help them procure husbands and men really pay money for the women.
Unbelievable. I can’t even find a man who wants to marry me for free! Maybe if I start wearing a price tag, I’ll have more luck?
But seriously, if we are going to allow women to be bought and brought into this country, we ought to be able to require that the companies who do the “arranging” do complete background checks on the applicants and maybe some follow-up visitation after the sale. No one has the suitable to beat up on anyone else, even if that person was paid for with American dollars.
